Convert T-carrier, E-carrier, SONET/SDH and OTN rates and see how many channels fit.
How many channels actually fit
Bit-rate division gets tributary counts wrong. An OC-3 is three STS-1s, and each STS-1 holds 28 DS1s, so the standard mapping is 84 DS1s. Dividing 155.520 Mbit/s by 1.544 Mbit/s suggests about 100, and that figure cannot be provisioned. MuxRates walks the mapping and shows the working.
Quantity is how many containers you have. The result is how many tributaries fit, the path, and the leftover line rate. The choices stay in the URL, so you can share them.
- 672 DS0s in a DS3
- 84 DS1s in an OC-3
- 336 DS1s in an OC-12
- 1,344 DS1s in an OC-48
- 63 E1s in a STM-1
- 80 ODU0s in an ODU4
About the data
Channel counts come from the tributary mappings in the standards. Standards used: ANSI T1.107, ITU-T G.702/G.704/G.707/G.709, Telcordia GR-253.
